Food safety
research and Extension efforts at Cornell involve campus
strengths across many disciplines, from on-farm production to processing to consumer education on safe preparation and storage of food.

The overall objective of all of these efforts is to provide for the nutritional well-being and safety of the people of New York State by helping to ensure a continuous supply of wholesome foods.

 Homeland Security Presidential Directive 9 (HSPD-9): Defense of U.S. Agriculture and Food recognizes agriculture as part of the critical infrastructure of the nation and establishes a policy to defend the food and fiber system against terrorist attacks, major disasters and other emergencies.

Improving Safety in Food Products - highlighting the efforts within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University to improve the safety of our food from farm to table.

Gateway to Government Food Safety Information - links to all aspects of food safety information and resources for producers, consumers and the food industry.

 

Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) - responsible for ensuring that the nation's commercial supply of traditional meat, poultry and egg products is safe, wholesome and correctly labeled and packaged.

NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets: Division of Food Safety & Inspection - ensures a safe and properly labeled food supply is provided in the State. Two additional quality assurance programs for farm products within the Department of Agriculture and Markets are:

Center for Food Security and Public Health - resources on animal diseases and issues that affect public health. Located at Iowa State University.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - has the primary responsibility for the safety and accurate labeling of all foods (except meat/poultry) and bottled water. Also responsible for the safety of livestock feeds, pet foods and veterinary drugs and devices.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) - system developed by the FDA designed for achieving proactive food safety.
